Floyd County Mourns the Passing of Commissioner Larry Maxey
It with profound sorrow and deep regret that the Floyd County Board of Commissioners announce the death of the Honorable Commissioner Larry Maxey. Commissioner Maxey was currently serving as Vice Chair of the Commission. He had selflessly served the citizens of Floyd County on the Board of Commissioners since 2012, serving as Chair in 2015 and 2016.
“I am heartbroken by the loss of my friend and colleague, Larry Maxey. Larry loved this community and served Floyd County for all the right reasons. I will miss his wisdom and his steady presence. Floyd County is better because of Larry’s service and leadership. He will be sorely missed,” said Allison Watters, current Chair of the Floyd County Board of Commissioners.
Commissioner Maxey was a life-long resident of Floyd County and a graduate of Armuchee High School and Berry College. He was a member of the 101st Airborne and served his country in Vietnam where he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was the president of Lakes Construction Company and a real estate agent at Garden Lakes Realty.
Commissioner Scotty Hancock had served with Maxey for 10 years and thought of him as the kindest and most respectful man he has ever known. “He was not only a fellow commissioner, he was a friend and mentor to me. Larry helped many people in need and never asked for recognition. He loved Floyd County and its citizens,” said Hancock.
During his time in office, Floyd County saw much growth and investment in the community’s future. His fellow commissioners could always be assured that Larry would bring a calm presence to any discussion. He was always willing to listen to the other point of view and was respected by all in the room. He supported the decisions of the board and his peers even when his thoughts were in opposition. County Attorney Virginia Harman described Maxey as a good friend whose perspective, shaped by military service and the general school of life had often helped her not get down or overly worried about things. “He was an absolutely tireless leader for Floyd County. That kind of experience and insight will be hard, if not impossible, to replace.”
Commissioner Rhonda Wallace served with Maxey the longest, both joining the Floyd County Board of Commission in 2012. “The value of our friendship was beyond measure,” said Wallace. “We started serving on the Commission together over twelve years ago. Larry was a true gentleman who showed kindness to everyone he met. He was always quick to ask, ‘What can I do for you today?’ I will always cherish his kindness. He was a true hero.”
Commissioner Maxey served the community and the future for all Floyd County citizens well. “Commissioner Maxey was a great leader in our community. He always provided sound advice and guidance for me in difficult situations and was a true friend. His commitment to public service in Floyd County will genuinely be missed,” said County Manager Jamie McCord.
“Commissioner Maxey was not only a great businessman, he was the epitome of what a great elected official should be,” said Commissioner Wright Bagby. “He was always looking out for the good of the whole, and always challenging everyone to think about the general citizen’s perspective.” Bagby stated, “I will miss his leadership and compassion. I greatly appreciate what I have learned from him about being an elected official.”
