Nancy Charmaine Scholls Weers age 90, passed away on August 5, 2024 at the Spires. She was the youngest of three daughters of William and Elsie Scholl. She was born Dec. 14,1933 in Joliet, Illinois. She went to Joliet High School and then attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College in Dekalb, Illinois where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. She worked for Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois for 22 years until she and Max moved to Rome in 1979 and Nancy became very active in the Rome community. Her contributions to this community exemplify one with a “servants heart”, who was a “doer” not a “taker”. She was a strong, independent person with a kind and gentle heart. She was dedicated to her family, First Presbyterian Church and her community..

She was Dr. Stu Smith’s office manager for many years. She was an active volunteer with the Rome History Museum where she served on the Board of Govenors. She was a board member of the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau and was its chairperson for a year. She was a member of the Rome Rotary Club for many years and she had been elected a director. She was in charge of the community services division and chair of the Red Apple luncheon committee three times.

She was honored as a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow. She served the United Way of Rome/Floyd County in numerous capacities including chairperson of the professional division, hospital and clinics division, hospital units division, head of the major firms division, the commerce and industry division.

She served as an executive board member and cochairman of special events committee and as a member of the music committee.

She was a Leadership Rome graduate and was recognized a Business and Professional Women Woman of the year nominee in 1985, in1987 as a Cherokee BPW Woman of the Year finalist. In 1999, she was the Woman in Management Woman of the year finalist.

Nancy served on the Rome/Floyd Clean Community Commission and the advisory board of the Rome/Floyd Senior Adult Recreation Center. She was a life member of the Floyd Medical Center Auxillary and served as President of the Auxiliary. She was co-chair of the Dogwood Ball in 1984. She volunteered for the Floyd Healthcare Foundation where she served on the business and professional committee and board of directors. After years of volunteering, she was hired as the director of Foundation development. Under her leadership, the Foundation developed and orchestrated a successful campaign, “Focus on the Future”. In 2002, she was a Heart of the Community Recipient.

She volunteered at Coosa Medical Group from 2013 to 2021. Nancy held herself with poise and grace. She was always “steady at the helm” and dressed impeccably whether in casual or business attire. In fact, was lovingly known as fancy Nancy at Coosa Medical Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max. Her parents William and Elsie Scholls, 2 sisters, Mrs. Avace Weakman and Mrs. Vivian Whyte.

Survivors include Bill and Glendene Naguszewski, sister-in-law, Mary Sue Kinder and many nieces and nephews.

Her family cannot begin to express their gratitude to the staff of the Spires, from being greeted as we signed in and “good nights” as we left. Many cared for our Nancy on the second floor of the Spires. We wish we could name each of them but thank you. Each weekend we had Donnie and Tiffany. Their care for Nancy was precious and having them there each weekend was a blessing. We also want to thank Heyman Hospice especially Amy, Kim, Jeanette and George for their care and attention to Nancy but also ourselves.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation on Friday, August 9, 2024 from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening at Daniel’s Funeral Home.
