Dorothy “Dot” Hannah Cox, 92 of Rome GA, went home to Heaven on July 15, 2024. Born in Danville, AL, she spent most of her adult life in Rome, GA.
A committed Christian, Dot loved God and people, and showed it by serving her church and others. She was a charter member of Garden Lakes Baptist Church, involved in the children’s program and as Sunday School secretary. She faithfully visited shut-ins and later served as a deacon.
Dot worked hard as a single mom to raise children Larry and Susan. She never met a stranger and was a friend to all. She always saw the good in people and was a very forgiving person. After retirement, Dot cared for her mother during her final years.
Dot was valedictorian of her high school class at Cherokee County High School in Center, AL. In 1991 after many years working and raising her children, she graduated from Shorter University at the age of 59 with a degree in Business Administration with an accounting major. Dot retired from her position with the state of Georgia in 1999 after 25 years of service. She also worked many years with H&R Block preparing tax returns for clients, friends, and family.
An avid Alabama football fan from an early age, she enjoyed watching college football throughout her life. Dot loved to travel with friends and family throughout the country, and was blessed with the opportunity to travel internationally several times as well. She also loved dancing and playing Rook.
For the past seven years, Dot lived in senior care facilities where she was loved by the staff. She frequently coaxed others into a game of dominos, which she usually won.
In 1974 Dorothy Hannah married Herbert “Bert” Cox. The marriage gave Dot two more wonderful children, and they and their families became a very important part of her life.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents, Mable and Clifford Aldridge.
Surviving are children, Larry Hannah of Rome, Susan Hannah Burton (Stan) of Chattanooga, Ron Cox (Joanne) of Atlanta, and Rusty Cox (Amanda) of Arcadia, FL; brother, Jerry Aldridge (Sharon) of Tuscaloosa, AL; and 6 grandchildren: April, Chandler, Emily, Jonathan, William and Broddie; 6 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a number of special cousins.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 20, from 12:00 noon EDST until the memorial service begins at 1:30 in the Oaknoll Chapel of Henderson & Sons Funeral Homes. Burial will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
