Mrs. Mattie Evelyn Deems, age 75, of Silver Creek, GA, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at her home in Forney, Al, with her daughter and son-in-law. She was surrounded all day by family and loved ones.

Mrs. Deems was born in Cave Spring, GA on March 10, 1949, daughter of the late Samuel Roy Ely and the late Mattie Lou Waits Ely. She went to Pepperell High School and loved to play basketball on the school team. She may have been short, but she could stand at half-court and ring the goal with ease. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church and was always strong in her faith. She taught her children to love the lord and to always let Him lead their steps.

Mrs. Deems worked for 17 years as a merchandizer at K-Mart, and later cleaned houses with her “partner in crime.” She enjoyed singing, karaoke, and dancing, but would only do it in front of a select few. She also loved comedy movies and working puzzles, but her heart was always with her family. She was involved in all things ‘family.’ She loved babies, and not only raised her own children, but she had a hand in raising many others as well. She enjoyed shopping with her daughter and granddaughters.

Her great granddaughters were all precious to her, but her great grandson, Torrin, was special because they spent many hours playing and talking. She had a way of getting down onto his level and they even got into trouble together often. He called her “maw maw trouble.”

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Jerry Parkerson Deems; her two children, Tammy Pearson (Stephen), and Gregory Parkerson Deems (Robin); her five granddaughters, Katie Davis (Cody),  Lacie Cowan, Amber Deems, Rebecca Clark (Harley), and Macie Deems; her two step grandsons, Kaleb Pearson, and Austin Moss; her eight great grandchildren, Cameren Truss, Morgan Franks, Maddison Davis, Brylee Davis, Jurnee Truss, Taelyn McCool, Knox McCool, and Torrin Truss; one brother, Samuel Gene Ely, Sr., who always had her back; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Rev. Jackson Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Floyd Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm.
