A 21 year-old Rome Man, Idris Dennis, has been sentenced to nine years in prison and another 11 years of probation as part of a plea deal following his shooting of Tyberious Byers at their jobs on Knollwood Drive in March 2023.

During testimony, it was shown that Byers repeatedly shoved Dennis who initially refused to fight him.  Dennis then left the scene and returned with an AR-15 to again confront Byers.

Witnesses told police that Byers again shoved Dennis before grabbing him under the arms in an attempt to pick him it.  The witnesses told authorities that he attempted to break the two up by Byers continued to go after Dennis. 

It was then Dennis shot Byers in the chest with the AR-15.

The District Attorney’s office argued that while Dennis referred to the shooting as a mistake, he knew what he was doing when he went to get the gun and returned.

Dennis pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

A Rome man accused of murder, Idris Dsu Dennis Jr, 20, is now facing additional charges after investigators found marijuana hidden in his car.

Reports said that Investigators found marijuana in the door and numerous marijuana joints near the drive shat column.

He is now charged with possession of marijuana.

PREVIOUS December 10 2022

On Saturday December 10, 2022, the Rome Police Department arrested Idris Dsu Dennis Jr, 20 of Rome, and charged with the murder of another.

Preliminary information indicates on December 10, 2022, at approximately 08:26pm Rome Police were dispatched to shots fired call in the street near 3 Knollwood Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a black male laying in the street with a single gunshot (a .223 rifle) wound to the chest.

He was transported by EMS and upon arrival to the Atrium Health Floyd, he was pronounced deceased. Exact cause of death will be determined at the GBI Crime Lab with the pending autopsy.


Criminal Investigators arrived and collected crime scene evidence. At this time the reason for the altercation is not known as the investigation is still on going.

Dennis is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.
