Joan Carolyn Smith, 87, of Hokes Bluff, AL, and in recent years Rome, GA, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on January 15, 2024.

Joan was born in Etowah County, AL, on October 12, 1936, daughter of the late John Henry Lankford and the late Zora Allred Lankford. She was also preceded in death by her precious husband, Ossie Lee Smith, a grandchild, Daniel Smith, and 3 brothers, Junior Lankford, Bobby Lankford, and Johnny Lankford. Joan was of the Baptist faith and a member of Cross Creek Community Church in Hoke’s Bluff, AL. She was employed with Life of Alabama Insurance Company before retiring. She loved working in her beautiful yard and was very particular about it as her neighbors and family can attest to fondly. Joan would also take meals and baked goods to so many as it was definitely her love language. If you ever helped her, doctored her, or just needed a good meal, you were sure to get something delicious.

Survivors include her sons, Dennis (Pam) Smith and Richard (Kathy) Smith; daughter, Johnna Blair; grandchildren, Janene Smith, Martin Smith, Sean Smith, Brittany Higgins, Madison (Zach) Harris, Trent (Autie) Blair, Carolyn Blair, Allison (Heath) Austin, and Savannah Walraven; great grandchildren, Easton Prater, Ossie Austin, Tripp Harris, Emma Claire Higgins and Jack Blair; bonus great grandchildren, Hunter, Dawson, Easton and Maeleigh Towe and their parents Junior & Amy Towe;  and a very special family member, Johnnie (Buddy) Beck, who she loved dearly.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Chris Walker officiating.

The family is very thankful to the wonderful loving caregivers from the assisted living side and the Harbor at Renaissance Marquis Rome, GA, where she lived since April of 2021. They truly loved her and helped us, as a family, so much. We will be forever grateful for their kindness. We would like to also thank Amedisys Hospice Care of Cartersville.
