Mrs. Joan Arlene Hughes, age 63, of Rome, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023, at a local hospital after a long battle with her health.

                Mrs. Hughes was born in Floyd County, Georgia on February 23, 1960, daughter of the late Noble Deems and the late Ruby Wright Deems.  She graduated from Pepperell High School in 1978.  She was an active member of McFall Baptist Church and loved serving the Lord through song on Sundays.  Mrs. Hughes began her working career as an office manager in the carpet industry and later worked as a bank teller.  She enjoyed reading books, doing puzzles, and watching Lifetime movies.  Mrs. Hughes also had a loving heart for children.  She supported her children in all their endeavors, attending school events, basketball games, and letting everyone know how proud she was.  She loved her family.  She enjoyed shopping trips with her sister, sisters-in-law, and nieces.

                Survivors include her husband, Barry Lane Hughes; two children, Jared Lane Hughes (Lauren) and Makayla Belle Hughes; two grandchildren, Nolan Hughes and Cayden Hughes; three siblings, Jerry Deems (Evelyn), Judy Smith (Lamar), and Lamar Deems (Rachael); numerous nieces and nephews.

                Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 10am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Kent Thomas officiating.  Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

                The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 5 until 7pm.

                Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Thursday at 9:30am and include, Scotty Deems, Corey Smith, Jamie King, Parker Sheppard, Brandon Deems, Landon Deems, and Matt King.
