Mrs. Evelyn Parris Cooper Johnson, of the Mathis Road Community in Rome

Mrs. Evelyn Parris Cooper Johnson, of the Mathis Road Community in Rome, GA, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023.  

                Mrs. Johnson was born on June 23, 1930, in Floyd County, GA, daughter of the late George Burton Parris, Sr. and the late Ruth Ethel Sudduth Parris.  She had one brother, Dr. George B. Parris, Jr., who preceded her in death.  Mrs. Johnson grew up and lived in the Spring Creek Community of Floyd County until marrying and moving away in June of 1952.  She and her husband, Fleet R. Cooper, had two children, Selena Jean Cooper and Charles Robert Cooper.  The family returned to the Rome area in 1967, to follow their long careers in the apparel industry.  Together, they built 411 Manufacturing Co. and Galaxy Manufacturing, both makers of designer ladies jeans under various private labels.

                Mrs. Johnson was a devout Christian who was a member of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church in her younger years and Spring Creek Baptist Church upon returning to Rome.  She sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and G.A.’s and was a faithful member of her Sunday School Class until her health prevented her from attending.

                Fleet Cooper preceded her in death on March 15, 1989.  Four years later, she reacquainted herself with Edward W. Johnson, a childhood friend.  They were married and she retired to spend the next 24 years with Edward Johnson.  He preceded her in death, as well, on November 9, 2014.  

                Mrs. Johnson continued to maintain the family home on Mathis Road until shortly before her death.   She is survived by her daughter, Jean Stanley (Methen); son, Charles Cooper (Sonya Magyar-Cooper); stepson, Mike Johnson; stepdaughter, Paulette Brown; grandchildren, Casi Cooper Hollingsworth, Leah Cooper White, Jeff Stanley (Suzanne), Blake Stanley, Chad Johnson, Niki Ingram, Miranda Whitlock and Lee Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

                Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 16, 2023, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Dr. Jim Reynolds and Dr. Jeff Dabbs officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens, Hwy. 411 East, Rome, GA.

                The family will receive friends from 12pm until service time on Monday at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel.

                Pallbearers are to assemble by 1:15pm on Monday at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel and include: Mike Johnson, Jeff Stanley, Blake Stanley, Jerry Osborne, Marlon Brumbelow and Lowell Worthington.
