Mr. Ernest Hayes was born April 3, 1933, in Bartow County to the late Ethel Carson Hayes and Hilson Hayes, Sr.
Ernest was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ward Crittenden; wife, Lucille Carter Hayes; his siblings, Mamie K. Hayes, Mack R. Hayes, J. C. Hayes, and Geneva Crittenden; step-children, Ernest Carter, Jr., Troy Carter, Robert Carter, Dorothy Mae Scott, Estelle Slocum, Frances Carter, Martha Lowe, Calvin Lowe, Lurlene Lowe, Katherine Ingram, Katie Harris, Ethel B. Kinnebrew, Ollie Reese, Gladys Christian, and Jewel Williams; grandchildren, Bobbie Jean Slocum, Jerry Scott, Ricky Scott, Lamar Carter, Ora Hunt, Roxy Lowe, Dexter Lowe, and Carlos Lowe; great-grandchildren, Trevin Slocum, Johnny Washington, William McConnell, and Preston Green; great great-grandchildren, Shaylah Brown and Zyanna Williams; daughter-in-law, Daphne Carter; sons-in-law, Sam Sanders, William Slocum, and Fado Scott; sister-in-law, Julia Hayes and best friend, Charlie Jones.
He was educated with Bartow County School System and was a hard worker. He retired after 37 years of service from Galey and Lord in Shannon, GA. He enjoyed talking on the CB radio to his friends and teaching his great great-grandson, Karter how to operate it. He also loved talking on the phone and checking on everyone in the family. We each had a different time that he would call. He enjoyed watching his Westerns, playing his guitar and listening to his blues. Most of all he enjoyed talking about the old days. Ernest was like a walking history book with in-depth detail of his family and his community. He was a faithful member and the honorary father of Gray’s Chapel AME Church.
Ernest leaves to cherish his memories, his companion, Lenora Kellogg of Rome, Georgia; step-children, Annie Bell Sanders of Kingston, Georgia, Melvin (Shirley) Lowe of Riverdale, Georgia, Leroy (Bobbie) Carter of Cartersville, Georgia, James Moore of Rome, Georgia; daughters-in-law, Joan Carter of Adairsville and Cora Lowe of Detroit, Michigan; sister, Jo Ella (Billy) Whitaker of Albany, Georgia; brother, Hilson (Mary) Hayes of Hinesville, Georgia; and Gina Brown (sister/niece). A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Special friends, William Hill, Sam Lumpkin, Mattie Scott, Dorothy Zuber, and Rita Beedles.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 1:00PM at NorthPointe Church, Adairsville. The body will lie in state at the church from 11:00AM until 1:00PM. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Adairsville. Pallbearers will be Stephen Brown, JR, Tyré Brown, Tyson, Wills, Tyris Slocum, John Wilkey, and Rodney Curtis. Flower bearers will be Sierra Gardner, Teresia Slocum, Desinaye Slocum, Carrika Bowdoin, Trina Printup, and Shondrecka Richard.
