Chinese tennis star Wu Yibing played like a man who had a plane to catch Sunday in a straight set over American teenager Ben Shelton to tin the inaugural Georgia’s Rome ATP Challenger at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. Wu,who did not drop a set in five matches over the week, got the first break of serve in the 12th game of the first set to take the lead over the Univ. of Florida phenom and never looked back.
The 22-year-old Chinese star, who won a Challenger event in Orlando last month, held serve the start the second game and then broke Shelton again to establish a lead in the second and deciding set.
Shelton, the reigning NCAA men’s singles champion and had a lot of support during the championship match at the Rome Tennis Center but just could not find a way to break Wu’s serve and the Chinese player painted the corners with hard-hitting groundstrokes throughout the match.
Both players will be participating in a Challenger tournament in Indianapolis during the coming week.
