Mr. Michael Clayron “Mike” Simmons, age 57, of Rome, GA, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022, at his residence.

                Mr. Simmons was born in Floyd County, GA, on June 13, 1964, son of the late Marshall Carl Simmons and the late Evie Lou Denson Simmons.  He was also preceded in death by a niece, Gina Rebecca Dudley.  Mr. Simmons was graduate of Model High School and received his heating and air certificate from Coosa Valley Technical college.  He began his career with the Rome Police Department in 1988 where he served as a patrol officer.  He then served as a Field Training Officer for several years before joining the motorcycle unit for the remainder of his career.  Officer Simmons trained many officers who went on to become ranking members of the department.  He retired in 2019 after 31 years of dedicated service to the Rome Police Department and the citizens of Rome.  Mr. Simmons was a member of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church.

                In addition to his work at the department, Officer Simmons was also hired by Darlington School as an off-duty officer where he provided security for sporting event, alumni weekend, school dances as well as other special events for over 10 years.  He was their main contact for extra security outside of their security staff and always lined up officers for them.  Officer Simmons knew so many of the kids by name, not just the 5 he was related to, and cheered them on as if they were his own.

                Survivors include his wife, Laura Simmons, Rome, to whom he was with for over 24 years; 2 sons, Todd Simmons, and his wife Courtney, and Morgan Simmons (Rebecca); a step-son, Dalton Hicks (Anna Grace); his pride and joy, his grandson, Liam Simmons; 2 sisters, Myra Simmons and Marsha Dudley (Jimmie); 2 brothers, Greg Simmons (Danita), and Gary Simmons; sister-in-law, Lacy Crowe; special friends, Lois and Susan Hyde; nieces and nephews.

                Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, in the chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Bro. Benny Price officiating.  Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

                The family will receive friends from 5pm until 7pm on Tuesday at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel.

                Pallbearers are to assemble by 10:30am on Wednesday at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, and include: active, Rusty Blair, Mike Mathis, Mark McDaniel, Jacob Simmons, Jay Shadday and Jim Dudley, III; honorary, Stan Reynolds, Bobby Bishop and his Brothers & Sisters in Blue and All First Responders who will be represented by Rome, Floyd County and other surrounding agencies.

                Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
