Mr. Melvin Austell Tolbert, age 94, of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at a local hospital.
Mr. Tolbert was born in Rome, Georgia on January 31, 1928, son of the late Clemmons Tolbert and the late Pearl Alred Tolbert. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Edna Ruth Mitchell Tolbert, on January 10, 2017, by two brothers, Henry Tolbert and Donald Tolbert, and by a sister, Mary Jones. Mr. Tolbert began working at the age of 17 and worked at Pepperell Manufacturing from 1945-1955. He retired from General Electric in 1988 after 34 years of service. After retirement, he worked for Jacki’s Florist for 10 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 65 years and was a member of the Joe Tarpley Fellowship Class. Mr. Tolbert was an avid golfer who still played 18 holes of golf regularly at 89 years of age. He was a hard worker and loved his family dearly.
Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Chester (David); a grandson, Jeff Chester (Sarah); a great grandson, Ellis Chester; a brother, Dwight Tolbert (Linda); a special friend and caregiver, Willa Peterson; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022, at 12 noon at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nanci Hicks and the Rev. Wayne Hopper officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity United Methodist Church on Monday from 11am until 11:45am.
Honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church on Monday at 11:30am and include: Doug Landrum, Wayne Compton, Pete Trammell, R. H. Coley, Max Sinclair, as well as members of the Joe Tarpley Fellowship Class.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 606 Turner McCall Blvd., Rome, GA 30165.
