The Georgia Red Cross is on-site assessing the damage and assisting families that were impacted by the severe storms and the deadly tornado that barreled through western parts of the state early Friday morning.

Earlier this week, Georgia’s Red Cross began monitoring for the potential of severe weather across the state and prepared to assist families in the event of heavy storm damage, tornadoes, and flash flooding.

The region coordinated with state and local emergency partners, placing dozens of volunteers on stand-by and ensuring pre-positioned relief supplies.

Overnight, as damage reports began to appear in Central Midwest and Northwest Georgia, volunteers responded quickly to open two hotel shelters for displaced families.

Presently, the Georgia Red Cross’s priority remains in identifying areas of impact to provide food and safe, non-congregate (hotel) sheltering for residents displaced due to the severe weather. The Red Cross is also working with other community partners to identify ways to work together to assist the affected communities.

Early estimates indicate that 50-70 families or more may need help in the days ahead. The Georgia Red Cross is ready to aid families impacted by the severe weather and encourages people with immediate emergency needs, like lodging, food, and health-related needs, to call the Red Cross at 1-855-891-7325.
