The Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism released their 2018 Annual Report and the statistics are strong for Floyd County. The report shows an upward trend with an increase of more than 5.9% year over year increase in tourism spending throughout the county.

The tourism office reports a study from the U.S. Travel Association shows tourists spent $158,850,000 in Floyd County during 2017, the most recent year that results are available. Each Floyd County household would need to be taxed an additional $311 per year to replace taxes generated by tourism economic activity. Additionally, the tourism industry supported 1,409 jobs throughout the service and hospitality industries. Travelers to Rome and Floyd County generated $6.44 million in state tax revenue and $4.60 million in local tax revenue.

In addition to the significant overall tourism impact, the office also reported sport, group, and event business that the tourism office directly assisted generated $19,227,332; a 9% increase over 2017.

Events with the most economic impact in 2018 included the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show, Jehovah’s Witness Conference and multiple tournaments including the USATF Region 4 Jr. Olympic Track & Field, GHSA Track & Field Championships, USTA Georgia Adult  Tennis Championships and USTA Georgia Bowl National Level 3 Tennis Tournament.

In addition to economic impact, the report highlights top achievements accomplished by the tourism office including: hosting 21 public tours; launching the Ramblin’ Rome Mobile Welcome Center; transporting 13,317 passengers in Downtown Rome on the free Roman Chariot service; and representing 101 local artists and makers at Georgia’s Rome Gift Shop events.

Rome Sports highlights include hosting the Inaugural International Tennis Federation Georgia Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament where 72 players from 18 countries participated; and hosting the Corky Kell Classic to kick off the GHSA football season.
