With a 7-2 vote Monday night the Rome City Commission approved a smoking ban for downtown Rome.
If caught smoking, police will issue a $50 fine for a first offense, $100 for second offense, third offense etc more.
The proposed Smoking Ordinance Amendment is scheduled for a Second Reading and a vote at tonight’s Rome City Commission meeting. As proposed in the new ordinance, the map illustrates the prohibited smoking area, shaded in red. Please note that only publicly owned property is included.
The “area” is comprised of streets (and Opera Alley) along with the downtown parking decks, Town Green and Bridgepoint Plaza. West and East 1st Streets and Tribune Street are not in the prohibited zone. The Rome City Commission meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 PM, Rome City Hall, 2nd floor, 601 Broad St. and is open to the public.
