After many years of waiting, students swimmers from Armuchee High, Coosa High, Model High, and Pepperell High finally received the opportunity to represent their schools in the pool. Students swam for their individual schools while competing on the Floyd County Schools Swim Team (FCSST). Led by head coach Lee Kaylor and assistant coach Lacie Hardigree, the FCSST amassed 12 swimmers early on. Starting with six girls and six boys on varsity, the team was competitive during their inaugural season.

“I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback on our school system offering a swim team,” said Floyd County Schools Director of Student Services Glenn White. “I think it’s been a great first season, and we appreciate all the time Coach Kaylor and Coach Hardigree dedicated to working with our students.”

Kaylor was a competitive swimmer who started swimming at age seven, competed until age 17, and was a member of the USA swim team swimming against hundreds of individuals across the southeast.

“These 12 swimmers all had various levels of experience, yet they all competed fiercely and repeatedly placed in the top 50%, several times in the top 10%,” said Kaylor. “I am proud of these student athletes for stepping up to the difficult and demanding challenge that swimming requires. The 2019-2020 swim season will continue to build on the strong foundation that this year has provided. I could not be more proud of the 2018-2019 FCSST.”

“When I first started swimming for FCSST, I had no idea it would be such an amazing journey,” said Coosa High sophomore Finn Hall. “From getting to know new people, to getting better in the pool, it was a great experience!”

“It was great! I had a blast swimming with such a great group of people,” said Model High sophomore Belle Bryant.

The following student athletes completed the season and received a certificate to letter:

  • Brewer Blalock, freshman, Model High
  • Belle Bryant, sophomore, Model High
  • Will Chandler, freshman, Model High
  • Alexia Fowler, sophomore, Model High
  • Michael Fuller, sophomore, Coosa High
  • Blake Galenzoski, sophomore, Pepperell High
  • Finn Hall, sophomore, Coosa High
  • Molley Maddox, freshman, Model High
  • Sophia Swann, sophomore, Model High

None of this would have been possible without the partnership Floyd County Schools has built with Darlington School to be able to use their swim facilities for the team to practice and compete locally.
