The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office continues to work an active investigation into the events leading up to a shooting on Young Street near Cartersville Saturday.
According to Sheriff Clark Millsap, early this morning Stanley Burton Smith, 61, of Cartersville, died in an Atlanta hospital. Smith had been taken by air ambulance to the hospital on Saturday after he shot and killed a 62 year old woman and then shot himself. Investigators confirm that the woman was shot numerous times by Smith in an apparent domestic dispute. The two were living together at 39 Young Street prior to this incident.
The woman’s name has not been released at this time as her next of kin notification has not been made.

The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting which took place just before 1pm Saturday. Deputies were dispatched to the area of Young Street near Cartersville in reference to a report of a woman being shot. Prior to arrival, more reports of shots being fired were received. Deputies arrived and discovered a male and female with gunshot wounds. The female was declared deceased on the scene and the male was taken by air ambulance to an area hospital. Initial investigations reveal that the pair lived together and were in a relationship.
Investigators believe that the man shot himself after shooting the woman. This is an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.
