Gone is Lidl, the German grocery chain, from the future Butler Square retail center next to the Floyd-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority office buildings on Shorter Avenue. However, a sign from Butler Properties was placed out front this week announcing the future retail center in front of the American Legion Post 5 building.
Reports said that Butler Properties still has plans to close on the property, as well as adjacent property which is owned by Shorter University. Closing is expected by this August.
According to the Butler Properties website, the developers conceptual plan has five letters of intent to the project and two parcels still available.
The listed properties includes two parcels of 3,200-square feet each, one of 5,200-square feet and another 2,200-square feet. The two tracts that are still shown as available are show as 7,420-square feet and 5,800-square feet.
Reports added that plans include two fast food restaurants to go along with other stores.
The latest development plan shows 330 parking spaces serving the development. Some of the parking fronts Shorter Avenue but the majority of it is located behind the retail spaces backing up to the levee.

Rome City Commissioners have approved a property swap that will make way for a 5 acre retail development on Shorter Avenue next to the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department.
Butler Properties is proposing a swap on property that is currently owned by Shorter University and the American Legion.
According to Butler Properties, “The site sits just after Turner McCall and 2nd Ave merge into Shorter Ave and as a result it has a very high traffic count of 34,700 VPD. Capitalizing on its location adjacent to the Floyd Medical Center (the largest employer in Rome) and across from the Midtown Crossing Shopping Center, retailers are offered a rare opportunity to locate in the heart of Rome and surrounded by the growing and existing retail synergy in the market.”
The anchor of the property would be a Lidl supermarket, which is a German discount grocery chain.
In exchange for the nearly once acre piece of property that currently serves as the Parks and Rec parking lot, the city will receive a total of 2.44 acres that Shorter and the American Legion own. That property includes pieces of the levee and the road from Heritage Park to Shorter Avenue.
Reports said that the properties of both the American Legion and Shorter University are currently under contract.
The deal also includes a promise from Butler to install a redlight for the development and the recreation department, at a cost of $300,000. The redlight would result in the closure of the North Second Avenue light and as a result flow all of the traffic from 2nd Avenue to Martha Berry Boulevard at Floyd Medical Center.
Butler Properties has said that plans include opening 10,000 Lidl stores in 27 counties, including 100 in the U.S.
Commissioners voted 7-1 for the exchange with Wendy Davis being the lone “no” and Craig McDaniel abstaining.
