Organized by the Restoration Rome Center for Foster Care Services, more than a dozen local churches participated in the national Stand Sunday movement. In honor of Orphan Sunday, November 12th, Stand Sunday is a movement among churches to stand on behalf of children in foster care and raise awareness of this growing crisis.

Stand Sunday originated in Brownwood, Texas, when Bishop Aaron Blake of the Greater Faith Community Church asked his congregation who would stand with him to address the foster care crisis in their community. Within one year, because of the participation of the church, Brown County became one of the only counties in the country with more foster care homes than children needing placement.

“There are more than 370 children in state care during any given month in Floyd County,” said Dr. Courtney Cash, VP of Development for Global Impact International. There simply aren’t enough approved homes to house them, and when their stay in care is extended, our children are being transferred far away from our community with little chance of reunification with their families. We need more state approved foster families.”

“It is a tremendous blessing to see so many of our churches join together, and people stand together to bring our children home,” said Cash. “And, for those who did stand, we are hosting an Open House this Thursday evening, November 16th, to introduce them to the Restoration Rome Center and all the children’s agencies working to address the foster care crisis in our community.”

There are more than 18,000 children currently in state care in the State of Georgia, and that number has grown by more than 7000 the past 5 years. The Restoration Rome Center for Foster Care Services is a ministry of Global Impact International focused on bringing strategic foster care services to Rome. Currently, Restoration Rome is in the process of renovating the old Southeast Elementary School building to include a comprehensive care center for children in state care, a medical clinic, training facilities, and office space for children’s service organizations.
