According to the northwest Georgia 9-1-1 dispatch issued at 5:00am Georgia time Wednesday, there was an accident involving three 18 wheelers, taking place around a mile inside the Georgia state line in Floyd County. Cherokee County emergency personnel were stationed at Highways 9 and 35 and at 117 – and were relieved by Alabama Department of transportation personnel some four-and-a-half hours later at around 8:30am Alabama time.
Passenger cars are still being detoured up County Road 117 while all big trucks are being re -routed to Highway 35 up 68 – where they’ll then take Highway 27 from Summerville to get into Rome.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, it will likely be sometime between 10:00am and noon Georgia time before the roadway is re-opened to traffic.
Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers is also on the scene; meanwhile, the Alabama Department of Transportation has been notified, and will hopefully be placing barricades to warn truckers to avoid the area.
We’ll have additional information as it becomes available.
