A new morgue in Floyd County will start to take shape following approve from Floyd County officials this week.

The morgue will be built at the former Floyd County Animal Shelter on Mathis Road.

Floyd County already purchased a cooler to store up to six bodies, and workers have already removed the entire insides to the property.

Officials said that plans are to add a viewing room for families and two administrative offices.

The property went under city control when the animal shelter closed that location and opened up on North Avenue.

The Rome City and Floyd County commissions are expected to finalize an agreement within the month that will allow the county to run a morgue there as well.
