The quiz bowl promotes academic growth in problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and advanced research skills. The activities also promote leadership and provide motivation for students to excel in academics. The quiz bowls are local school system events with no region or state competitions for the winners. McCall Govignon, director of advanced academic programs for Floyd County Schools, considers these events important for elementary and middle school participants. “The Academic Quiz Bowl gives these children the opportunity to display their skill and academic talent and prepares them to compete in academic decathlons at the high school level,” Govingnon said.
Armuchee Elementary wins annual Academic Quiz Bowl
Armuchee Elementary avenged a tight second place finish last year to win the 2017 Academic Quiz Bowl. Armuchee finished only five points behind last year’s winner Model Elementary but the team put that heartbreaking runner-up finish behind them to pull away and win the 15th annual Academic Quiz Bowl for elementary schools. The competition is an intellectual battle between fifth-grade teams of gifted students in the system’s Kaleidoscope program. The competition was held on Tuesday, March 14 at Berry College.
Armuchee, coached by Jessica Goss, placed first with 470 total points; Alto Park Elementary, coached by Judy Roebuck, finished a close second with 455 points; and Model Elementary, coached by Angie Yancey, placed third with a total of 415 points. Cave Spring Elementary, Garden Lakes Elementary, Johnson Elementary, and Pepperell Elementary teams also participated in the academic competition.
The gifted competition was started to bring all Floyd County gifted students together to compete in academics. Fifth-grade gifted students in Floyd County Schools participate in the elementary division in math, science, vocabulary, spelling, trivia, literature and geography.
