Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has awarded 18 contracts, for statewide transportation projects totaling $44,520,635. Projects were advertised for bids in October, bids were received in November and contracts were awarded on December 2.
Georgia DOT continues to focus on preserving existing infrastructure by addressing deferred maintenance for state highways and bridges with nine awards totaling$27.8 million for resurfacing and maintenance of 84 miles of state highways; and seven contracts totaling $11.8 million forrehabilitation of 27 bridgesand construction of five bridges.
Resurfacing and maintenance represent 62 percent of the awarded funds, while bridges represent 26 percent.
“Over the last year, with the funds resulting from the Transportation Funding Act, we have been steadily tackling the conditions of our infrastructure,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. said. “Looking ahead, we anticipate continued improvement in pavement conditions and replacements of our aging bridges.”
The highest valued awarded contract is a 10-mile pavement rehabilitation on I-75/SR 401 from north of SR 96/Richard Russell Parkway to north of the Bibb/Crawford county line. This section of roadway has broken concrete slabs that need replacement. The project, valued at $9.8 million, was awarded to R.A. Knapp Construction, Inc. of Kansas City, Kansas. The anticipated completion date is December 31, 2017.
Since FY 17 began on July 1, Georgia DOT has invested $175.8 million in resurfacing interstate and state routes.
Georgia has more than 14,600 bridges. With an average age of 43 years and load restrictions on 12 percent of bridges on state roads, addressing bridge conditions is vital – not only for safety, but also for economic development. Most of these bridges were designed to have a 50-year lifespan, McMurry said.
Many of Georgia DOT’s bridge maintenance projects focus on preservation like deck overlay and painting.
“While rehabilitation fixes something that is broken, preservation projects aim to maintain the bridge so it doesn’t get broken,” explained State Bridge Maintenance Engineer Andy Doyle. “In deck overlay, we remove the top surface of the bridge deck and replace it. This helps protect the bridge and extends its life; the same way putting a new roof on your house would protect your house.”
