A Georgia DOT Maintenance Service contractor will begin to work today on the pavement preservation of four highways in Carroll, Haralson, Paulding, and Polk counties. While work will proceed daily, possible impact on traffic will be limited to the hours between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Georgia DOT has just awarded a Service Maintenance contract to REMAC Inc. to perform crack sealing and filling on the following highways:
- State Route (SR) 16 in Carroll County
- SR 120 in Haralson County
- SR 6 Business in Paulding County
- SR 113 in Polk County
“This Maintenance Service contract is a good example of the benefits of suitable funding for preventive maintenance investment in northwest Georgia. It is just the beginning,” said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the DOT office in Cartersville.
Pavement expands and contracts with seasonal temperature changes. This movement can and does cause the surface of the roadway to crack, allowing water to seep into the road bed. Water is the most destructive element to pavement and it has to be prevented from entering the roadway base and sub-base. Sealing the cracks with a flexible rubberized asphalt that bonds to the crack walls and moves with the pavement prevents water intrusion. As part of Georgia DOT pavement preservation program, crack sealing helps to reduce pavement deterioration by restricting water penetration into underlying base and sub-base layers. This restriction helps to maintain pavement structural capacity and limits future degradation. Sealing cracks and joints in pavements thus extends the service life of the highway surface and pavement.
Funding for this and similar Maintenance Service contracts comes from the new annual sustainable routine maintenance investment provided by the Georgia Transportation Funding Act (TFA) of 2015. In their 2015 legislative session, Georgia lawmakers addressed the state’s critical transportation infrastructure needs with passage of House Bill 170, Georgia’s transportation funding bill. The Transportation Funding Act (TFA) of 2015 is expected to generate an estimated $870 million in the first fiscal year. This sustained annual revenue will be used to fund much-needed routine maintenance and capital improvements.
