Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback and five-star recruit of defending champion Cartersville, heads ups the Class AAAA preseason all-state team. He’s joined by teammate Trey Creamer, a cornerback.
Jefferson and Woodward Academy have the most preseason all-state members with three each.
Jefferson has 2,000-yard rusher Colby Wood, blue-chip OL Caleb Wilson and DT Dontae Wilson.
Woodward is paced by WR Josh Johnson (1,111 yards receiving last season), DB J.R. Pace and LB K.J. Phillips. Woodward QB Ryan Glover, who threw for 2,740 yards last season, would’ve been a good choice, too, but was passed over for Lawrence, the No. 1-rated college prospect among juniors in the nation.
The most highly regarded recruits on the list are Lawrence, Mary Persons DE Malik Herring (consensus No. 10 prospect in Georgia), Cairo LB Walter Grant (No. 34), Jefferson OT Chandler (No. 39) and Thomson CB Christian Tutt (No. 15 among juniors).
Mary Persons, Eastside and St. Pius have two players each on the team.
Something unusual is the absence of players from traditional powers Marist and Sandy Creek. Both are expected to be Top-10 teams again, though neither has obvious star power, yet.
