A Berry College Sports Journalism class took first place at this year’s Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards.
The project “The Things They Carry” – a series of stories about the off-the-field challenges faced by Berry athletes – won the Online Sports Reporting category. Winners will compete in the national Mark of Excellence Awards judging in September. The Mark of Excellence awards honor the best in student journalism and are awarded by the Society of Professional Journalists. A complete list of winners and finalists are posted at www.spj.org.

A few of the athletes included are Methus Weldon and Matthew Farinella. Weldon balances athletics with academics while running the Season’s Harvest student enterprise. Farinella is training to be a Navy SEAL in addition to his training as captain of the Berry College Vikings football team.
Professor of Communication and Department Chair Brian Carroll taught the class.
