Herbert Harper, Model area lead custodian, has been selected as the Distinguished Service Classified Employee of the Year for Floyd County Schools. Harper was presented with the award at the May Board of Education meeting along with a gift check for $250 presented by award sponsor Clear Concepts.
Harper was recently promoted to the Model area position but he was the lead maintenance supervisor at Model High when he won the monthly award qualifying him for the Employee of the Year honor. In the written nomination, Harper was lauded for his willingness to spend extra time working on sets for drama productions at Model High and anything else at the school that would benefit the teens at Model.
In addition to his normal duties, the nomination took note of special work he was willing to do at Coosa High School. The nomination stated, “He helped transform the home side bleachers at Coosa High tremendously by not only pressure-washing the entire home bleachers but he also came to the school on Saturday and helped paint.” The nominator added, “We are thankful for what Mr. Harper did for our kids – kids he didn’t even know!”
The Distinguished Service Award is presented each month to employees in the school system who go above and beyond to serve children and our schools. The award winners are nominated by students, parents, and other staff members for their attitude and work ethic. These individuals are making a difference for the children in Floyd County Schools. Two employees, one employee from certified staff and one from classified personnel, are honored each month by the Floyd County Board of Education.
The monthly winners are then included in the end-of-the-year Distinguished Service Employee of the Year Awards with one overall winner selected in each category. The Distinguished Service Award Employees of the Year are truly the best-of-the-best. April Cummings, gifted teacher at Glenwood Primary, won the certified award.
