Residents throughout Northwest Georgia are gaining greater access to behavioral health services through a new partnership between Floyd Medical Center and Willowbrooke at Tanner.

Under the agreement, Willowbrooke at Tanner will assume management of Floyd Behavioral Health Center, Floyd’s 53-bed adult inpatient behavioral health facility, as well as operation of Floyd’s outpatient behavioral health services.

Willowbrooke at Tanner, the behavioral health service of Carrollton-based Tanner Health System, operates another 82-bed inpatient behavioral health facility in Villa Rica that serves children, adolescents and adults. The service has also built one of the most comprehensive lines of outpatient behavioral health services in the Southeast.

“Floyd has been providing behavioral health services for decades, and in 1992 built Floyd Behavioral Health on Shorter Avenue. We just completed a comprehensive renovation of that facility to prepare for enhanced behavioral health services, including becoming an emergency receiving facility. As we have had conversations with Tanner in the past months, we have learned that they have depth of experience and a record of developing and leading behavioral health programs that help people lead healthy, productive lives,” said Kurt Stuenkel, president and CEO of Floyd Medical Center. “With their involvement in our behavioral health services, Floyd will better be able to provide care to the whole patient.”

Willowbrooke at Tanner recently expanded its outpatient partial hospitalization program (PHP) — providing intensive outpatient care for adults, children and adolescents — to include a location in Cartersville, serving Bartow and Polk counties, supplementing its established locations in Carrollton and Villa Rica. Willowbrooke at Tanner also recently established Regain at Willowbrooke, a unique outpatient treatment program that provides after-hours care in a confidential, supportive environment for working professionals who struggle with substance abuse.

The partnership will enable Willowbrooke at Tanner to provide infrastructure support, physician and staff recruitment and access to Willowbrooke at Tanner’s extensive line of behavioral health services for Floyd patients.

“At Tanner, we’re aware of how important mental health is to the communities we serve,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “Behavioral health is part of any comprehensive approach to health. It affects our friends, our loved ones, our neighbors, our peers and our colleagues; making sure people have access to the services they need is essential.”

In addition to managing the behavioral health services for Floyd, Willowbrooke at Tanner continues to offer its innovative partial hospitalization program, providing intensive outpatient care for adults, children and adolescents; the intensive outpatient program, providing a less-intensive level of care than PHP and often serving as a step-down service to help patients continue their recovery; the Tanner Center for Behavioral Health, offering state-approved Core services; the Tanner Intensive Family Intervention Program (TIFIP), providing in-home counseling for families and treating children experiencing emotional and behavioral difficulties; program tracks, with programs focused on addressing problems such as anger management, truancy, bullying, substance abuse, trauma and more; animal-assisted therapy, with certified animal therapists; innovative equine therapy programs; expressive therapy, using art, performance and music to help patients express themselves; and more.

“We look forward to working with Tanner and developing more programs to serve our service area and patients,” said Stuenkel. After two years of management of the Floyd program, Floyd and Tanner will enter into a long-term partnership between the two organizations in the operation of a jointly-owned behavioral health company. “We look forward to joining hands with Tanner, a community-based hospital system with a mission similar to ours. Working together, we believe that we can bring enhanced behavioral health care to our region.”
