A fugitive from North Carolina is being south by Cartersville police after they escaped a patrol car on U.S. 411 and Ga. 20. Hunter Jewel Nichols, 23 of Cartersville, was taken into custody after a car in which he was a passenger in was stopped for a broken taillight.
Reports said that when officers ran a check on Nichols it was determined that he was wanted in North Carolina. After he was handcuffed and placed in the police car he was able to open the door and run.
Reports added that he was wanted in Randolph County, North Carolina on a eluding charge.
A K9 was brought in and tracked Nichols through the woods to Old Tennessee Highway but lost the trail. Police were never able to find him.
Police officials are reviewing the audio and video to determine how Nichols was able to get out of the car.
Nichols is additionally charged with theft by taking, escape and obstruction of an officer. He is described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.
