Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) awarded 24 contracts for statewide projects totaling $89.7 million. These projects were advertised for bids in January and awarded in early February. The listing includes 13 resurfacing projects valued at almost $46 million, and seven bridge projects valued at $32.5 million, including construction of four bridges that are funded from bonds appropriated by the 2015 General Assembly. Two of those projects include; 6.668 miles of widening and reconstruction on SR 140 beginning at SR 53 in Floyd County and continuing west of Oothkalooga Creek in BArtow County and bridge rehabilitation at various locations in Bartow and Floyd Counties.

“As the months progress, we will see a significant increase in projects that tackle the state’s deteriorating transportation infrastructure—projects to restore Georgia’s pavements and bridges—as a result of the Transportation Funding Act,” GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said. “GDOT will perform more routine maintenance than we were previously able, like fixing potholes and guardrails. Plus there will be more resurfacing and restriping of roads. We ask the public to ‘pardon our progress’ as we work to improve our transportation network.”
In January, the largest transportation investment, valued at $24.7 million, is 18.6 miles of resurfacing on I-75/SR 401 in Catoosa and Whitfield counties in northwest Georgia. The project begins at US 41/SR 3 and extends to the Tennessee state line. The contract was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. of Marietta. The completion date is December 31, 2016.
Projects that address safety include:
- Striping and pavement marking upgrades at various locations on I-85/SR 403 in Coweta, Fulton, Meriwether and Troup counties in west central Georgia. The $7.8 million contract was awarded to Peek Pavement Marking, LLC of Columbus. The completion date is December 31, 2016.
- In Metro Atlanta, a $2.7 million pedestrian safety improvement project in Fulton County was awarded on SR 8/SR 10 beginning at Piedmont Avenue and extending to SR 42. In DeKalb County, operational improvements on SR 12 (Covington Highway) at Lithonia Industrial Boulevard are valued at $423, 630.
- In Paulding County, various locations on US 278/SR 6 will see intersection improvements valued at $378,000.
January’s awards also include construction of four bridge bond projects in Banks, Coffee, Haralson and Lincoln counties, for a total value of $24.5 million. Since the legislature’s appropriation of $100 million in bridge bonds in last year’s session, 20 bridge bond projects have been awarded. The remaining bridges to be funded with bonds will be bid out in future months.
Over $8 million was also awarded for three bridge rehabilitations in Baldwin/McDuffie, Bibb and Murray counties.
