Close to 430,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Etowah River near the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds thanks to the amount of rain the area has received. According to Rome/Floyd Sewer and Water Division the discharge was reported on February 24th. They added that now that the river has receded the spill is in the process of being cleaned.
Reports said that the spill was caused by heavy rains which caused the river to rise to flood stage levels overtopping manholes both upstream and downstream.
The City of Rome Water Reclamation Facilities lab will monitor the river for one year.
