According to officials, gun shots were never fired despite previous reports on Thursday.  Reports said that a nearby church notified 911 that shots were fired during a chase with officers near Westminister Presbyterian Church. However, police later said that they never heard the alleged shots. Several Rome City Schools including, West Central, West End and Elm Street Elementary Schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Police said that they were notified that a vehicle was stolen at Evans Store in Coosa and was spotted on Shorter Avenue a short time later.

Reports said that the truck, driven by Russell Steven Carr,  of Cartersville, turned off onto Westdale Road and then Belmont Drive, which has a dead end.  Officers said that the 31 year-old suspect jumped a curve, traveled into the church’s playground where he exited the vehicle and ran on foot.

Carr was captured hiding in bushes.

He is charged with criminal damage to property (2nd degree), possession and carrying a concealed weapon without a license,  fleeing a police officer, obstruction of a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, speeding, failure to yield right of way, duty upon striking fixture, failure to yield emergency vehicles, reckless driving, stop sign violation, failure to maintain lane, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, theft by taking (motor vehicle).
