A report by the National League of Cities (NLC), National
Association of Counties (NACo), and the U.S. Conference of
Mayors (USCM) estimates that local governments will
cut approximately a half million employees during the
next two years.
That is around 4% of the 12.5 million people currently
employed by those governments. According to the
Federal statistics, local governments, not including
school districts, have reduced their work force by
less than 90,000 during the recession.
