Shorter College senior Joaquin Correnti fired a two-under, 70 to lead the Hawks to a second place standing after the first round of the Rome News-Tribune Invitational hosted by Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga.

The Hawks, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, shot a team total of 288 in the first round and sit two strokes behind team leader John A. Logan Community College. Shorter is in contention for a second team tournament title in as many spring events after taking first place at the Thomas University Winter Invitational in February.

Freshman Julio Coto joined Correnti by contributing an under-par round, shooting a blistering 33 on the back nine to go into the clubhouse with a one-under, 71. Correnti and Coto stand in fourth and eighth place, respectively heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Sophomore Nico van Rensburg sits in 18th-place overall after turning in a 73 and junior Arvid Bengtsson, coming off his medalist performance at the Thomas University Winter Invitational in Valdosta several weeks ago, is currently 20th after his two-over, 74.

Freshman Jesper Carlsson, who finished seventh at the Thomas University Invite, stands in 80th-place after a day one round of 80.

John A. Logan Community College leads the field heading into Tuesday’s action after firing a day one total of 286. Southern Wesleyan University shot a team total of 290 and stands in third place while the University of the Cumberlands (292) and Lee University (296) round out the top five.

JALCC’s Filip Timmerman has a two stroke lead individually after he fired a first round 66. Pierre Carlsson of Cumberlands and Estaban Aristizabal of St. Thomas University (Fla.) are tied for second with first rounds of four-under and four players, including Shorter’s Correnti, are in contention, just four strokes out of the lead.
