The man killed in an accident while working with the Cartesrsville Sanitation Department on Jones Street Wednesday has been identified as 43-year-old Lester Robert Baker.  Floyd County Prison Warden Mike Long said that Baker was from the Cartersville area.  Long said that Baker was transported to the Cartersville Medical Center approximately 8 minutes after the accident occurred.  He was pronounced dead at 2 p.m.  Baker was a low-security inmate with just a short time left on his sentence.  He entered the Floyd County Prison in November 2018.

Reports said that Baker was riding on the back of a garbage truck when he became pinned to a utility pole as the truck backed down the street and sideswiped the pole.

The Floyd County Prison has work release contracts with both Cartersville and Bartow County Public Works.  Extra personnel was needed today due to increased trash from the Christmas Holiday.  Inmates have worked in this community for approximately 5 years.  Warden Long said Baker had experience working with the garbage trucks.  He specialized in working with heavy equipment.
