As Rep. Christian Coomer, of Cartersville, leaves his District 14 seat to assume his appointment to the Georgia Court of Appeals, his father has announced his candidacy to fill his son’s seat.

Ken Coomer, a former US Marine and pastor, said that he will seek the seat with an endorsement from top Republicans in the House.

The 14th District covers the southeast quadrant of Floyd and northern half of Bartow County.

A special election will be called to fill the seat and there will be an open qualifying period. Dates have yet to be set.

Ken Coomer is senior pastor at Adairsville Church of God.

He said on Monday that he already has over $60,000 in his campaign fund and endorsements from House Speaker David Ralston, Senate President Pro Tem Butch Miller, House Majority Leader Jon Burns and Majority Caucus Chair Matt Hatchett.

Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Ruth Demeter said a decision has not yet been made on contesting the seat.
