The Cedartown Middle Lady Dawgs now sit atop the standings after defeating previously undefeated Rockmart 6-2 on Monday.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an error from the Bulldogs infield.
Rockmart’s pitching continued to impress, shutting down the Lady Dawgs for the first three innings.
However, CMS pulled away for good in the third after scoring five runs.
Abby Reynolds singled on a 1-0 count, scoring a run. That was followed by Hannah Cochran, who doubled and knocked in two runs. Kadince Oxenreider then singled on the first pitch at bat, and was later drove home when Autumn Boatner knocked her in when she hit a double.
Reagan Clarke earned the win after completing a complete game, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
The Lady Dawgs were led by Oxenreider, who went 3 for 3 at the plate.
Head coach Tony Potts said, “I had told the team that this was going to be a dog fight from the start. We had to keep our heads up and keeping moving forward.”
Potts added, “I am so happy for these ladies. We had a “blackout” at school and nearly everyone of our students participated. I couldn’t be more thrilled than to see how our school has backed our team. Most importanly we have to stay humble, stay hungry and keep working.”
Cedartown tore up the base path, as two players stole at least two bases. Reynolds led the way with four.
Cedartown will play Ashworth in Calhoun in a double header Tuesday before returning home for a game with Darlington on Wednesday.
