Mr. Lydell “Dell” Alvin Ayers, age 88, of Armuchee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at his residence.
Mr. Ayers was born in Floyd County, GA on November 3, 1928, son of the late Alvin S. Ayers and the late Mamie Weeks Ayers. He spent all his life in Floyd County and served the community through the Lion’s Club (15 yrs), Floyd Springs Masonic Lodge (50 yrs), and Rotary Club (18 yrs). He was a founder of First Rome Bank in 1988 and served on the Board of Directors for Regions Bank. Mr. Ayers has been a member of Armuchee Baptist Church since 1946, where he was a Sunday School teacher and ordained as a Deacon in 1958. He is best known as being associated with Higgins Shoe Store, as the owner and manager of since 1946. Mr. Ayers was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1952 until 1954.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Betty Perry Ayers, Armuchee; two sisters-in-law, Patsy Tucker, Armuchee, and Louise Walraven, Rome; bunches of nieces and nephews, and two beloved pets, Summer and Bella. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Opal Harvey, Dorothy Comer and Aveleigh Avery and by two brothers, Sherman and David Ayers.
Graveside services will be held at Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery on Big Texas Valley Rd. on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Bob Skelton officiating. The Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard will present military honors.
Mr. Ayers will lie in state at the Armuchee Baptist Church on Saturday, with visitation to be held from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the Cemetery Fund of Armuchee Baptist Church, 6648 Texas Valley Rd., Rome, GA 30165.
The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the devoted personnel and professional care Mr. Ayers received from both Pruitt Hospice Care and Caregiver Services of Georgia.
